Social capital—the relationships and connections that provide access to information, opportunities, and support—is a critical factor in students’ educational, career, and economic success. Research shows that both strong relationships, such as mentors, and broader networks of acquaintances can significantly improve college attendance, career exploration, and employment outcomes.
The Cultivating Connections framework developed by Education Strategy Group encourages schools, districts, and community partners to intentionally integrate social capital development into college and career pathways. By helping students recognize, strengthen, expand, and activate their networks, educators can equip learners with the knowledge, confidence, and skills needed to access new opportunities and successfully navigate their postsecondary and career journeys.
